How Body and Soul Interact with the Spiritual Mind: Multimodal Cognitive Semiotics of Religious Discourse
2008
Cognitive Linguistics as an enterprise provides new theoretical and methodological instruments in understanding the relationship between people's thoughts and the language they use. Spiritual and religious experiences (particularly the ones involving some type of revelation from or communication with a transcendent being) are especially interesting since they involve some type of external, physically invisible force or agent, contributing an "ineffable" quality to the phenomenon. However, people can and do describe such events, and metaphors and blends pervade the representations of certain concepts of the transcendental when attempting to talk about such abstract ideas. One of the main ten…
Religious Struggle and Psychological Well-Being: The Mediating Role of Religious Support and Meaning Making
2020
Although a variety of studies have found robust links between religious/spiritual (r/s) struggle and poorer well-being, only a few have examined the means by which r/s struggle affects mental well-being. The present paper aims to examine religious support and meaning making as mediators of the relationship between r/s struggle and well-being. The study included 226 adults, 108 women and 118 men, aged between 17 and 78 years. We applied the Religious and Spiritual Struggle Scale, Religious Support Scale, Meaning Making Scale, and Psychological Well-Being Scale. The results demonstrated that both religious support and meaning making were mediators in the relationship between r/s struggles and…
Un alma enferma. La experiencia religiosa de Wittgenstein a la luz de Las variedades de la experiencia religiosa de William James

Is our brain hardwired to produce God, or is our brain hardwired to perceive God? A systematic review on the role of the brain in mediating religious…
2009
To figure out whether the main empirical question "Is our brain hardwired to believe in and produce God, or is our brain hardwired to perceive and experience God?" is answered, this paper presents systematic critical review of the positions, arguments and controversies of each side of the neuroscientific–theological debate and puts forward an integral view where the human is seen as a psycho-somatic entity consisting of the multiple levels and dimensions of human existence (physical, biological, psychological, and spiritual reality), allowing consciousness/ mind/spirit and brain/body/matter to be seen as different sides of the same phenomenon, neither reducible to each other. The emergence …

«La voz de la conciencia». La conexión noológica de moralidad y religiosidad en Zubiri
2009
Estudio de la noción «voz de la conciencia» en la obra de Xavier Zubiri, tras una contextualización histórica del tema, mostrando su importancia en las obras más tardías, así como su conexión con las fuentes más relevantes en el pensamiento contemporáneo, en especial, la Fenomenología y la Analítica existencial de Heidegger. Study of the notion «voice of conciousness» in the works of Xavier Zubiri, after a historic view, showing its relevance in the last works and its connect…
